Bluechain Point of Sale system is a product enabling Bluechain to empower business owners to utilise payments technology to perform in-store transactions. It is designed to suit different needs for businesses from retailers, restaurants to tradies, enabling consumers to pay for goods or services using Bluechain via their phone.
Challenge
Our goal was to redesign the existing POS to improve the experience on mobile and tablet for both iOS and Android platforms while maintaining the Bluechain brand and facilitating future new features.
Design issues
• Visually inconsistent with the Bluechain app and it didn’t follow the app guideline
• Several key features were missing in order to do a simple task
• Initial design wasn’t responsive to support smaller devices and was working properly on certain tablets
• The information architecture wasn’t scalable for the future
Research phase
Throughout the process, we visited cafes such as Axil Coffee Roasters, Hawthorn Common and Bawa Cafe to see how their staff used their POS system to serve customers and to get a better understanding of what was working and what wasn’t.
Competitive analysis
We’ve looked at different POS systems such as Square, Kounta, Shopify, Vend and Neto to understand commonalities in experience flows and advanced features they provided. This not only helped us to realise where we sat with our POS system, it gave us an idea of features that stood us apart from our competition. Features like our unique payment options, such as Nearby Payments.
We also explored outside of POS platforms for inspiration in products like Gmail, Outlook, Linkedin, Airbnb and many more. We started to see a trend of standard experience which ultimately solidified our decision for the layout and experience flows.
Design phase
We reviewed the research outcomes and brainstormed conceptual designs, and we took stakeholders’ along the design journey to ensure we stayed true to the business drivers for the product. We then refined our design and took that into our prototyping phase. During the prototyping process, we tested our designs with users to iteratively improve the design and confirm the experience was suitable to complete transactions quickly and securely.
Layout
One of the major changes we did was to place the category navigation to the left. Not only this allowed users to seamlessly navigate from left to right but gave us an opportunity to organise a list of products more efficiently to give users a better understanding of the overall view of different types of products.
Final designs
We have completely improved the core experience from making seamless checkouts for both customers and staff to managing inventory all in one platform. We’ve also reduced the number of steps to complete a transaction enabling sales to finalise quickly.
Payment
Bluechain payments technology provides customers with different payment methods to make a purchase.
Save and retrieve orders
Serve multiple customers at once by saving and retrieving orders while switching between orders to add or edit new items.
Transactions
Refer to transactions to get an overview of receivables (request to pay) and history of customers’ purchases to manage refunds or exchanges.
Miscellaneous
Offer a miscellaneous item sale on the spot by adding a custom line item to enable a custom price to be set, speeding up the serving process.
Create & edit inventory
Manage inventory by creating and editing products on one platform and categorise them by business needs.
